The Healthy Way to Go Green for St. Paddy’s Day!

The juicing trend has been going strong for a while now, even though the health benefits have become slightly controversial. Juicing is super healthy as long as you don’t go overboard. I like to juice a big pile of fruits and veggies at once and drink a little bit each morning. Continue reading “The Healthy Way to Go Green for St. Paddy’s Day! “

Restaurant Review: Blue Window

This isn’t what I would call a “healthy” place to eat.  It’s more of an “I’m craving some amazingly crafted junk food” kind of place. It’s what Chef KAJSA ALGER & Co-Chef SUSAN FENIGER call a food truck without the truck.  Man, it’s DELICIOUS!

Recipe: Christmas Cookies Tradition

If you can’t tell Amy and I love to bake!  She shared her famous Ginger Snap recipe last week, and today I’m going to share some recipes my mom and I make every year.  Once every holiday season, we have what we call our Annual Cookie Making Day.  This year we did it a little early, right before Thanksgiving.  We didn’t necessarily create these recipes; we just really enjoy making and eating these cookies.

Here are some fun recipes for you to take to your next holiday party.

Recipe: Harvey’s Ginger Snaps

I have lived far away from my family for the last several years. Around the holidays I get especially nostalgic for the traditions I grew up with. Luckily in 2 weeks I will be at home with my family, but until then, It helps to make my dad’s famous ginger snaps. They truly are famous among friends I grew up with, and people we have shared them with along the way. My dad has been making them for as long as I can remember. There were a few years when all my cousin wanted for christmas was a batch of the amazing cookies.

Last christmas, my best friend Julia made me this amazing dish towel with the recipe on it so I will never lose it! (This homemade towel is also a great gift idea!) Continue reading “Recipe: Harvey’s Ginger Snaps”

What to Make to Wow Your Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving Guests

02friends

As the most connected generation ever, millennials put  a very strong emphasis on their social lives. Many of my friends don’t try to go home for thanksgiving. Partially because it is so expensive to fly and they live to far away, and partially because it’s just easier to do thanksgiving with your friends! I will be going to a family thanksgiving but yesterday got to do a “Friendsgiving” with friends in LA. We did a southern themed meal so that we wouldn’t have to eat TOO much turkey this week. “Friendsgiving” is the perfect holiday because you don’t have to deal with any family drama and you get an excuse to cook and be merry with your favorite people to hang out with. I brought Kentucky bourbon pie and spiked hot apple cider. Try making them for your “friendsgiving” or thanksgiving. They will be a hit wherever you bring them!

Recipe: Delicious, Paleo Apple Crisp!

I love baking and fall is my favorite time to bake. This past week I was back on the east coast for a wedding. Much to our surprise the apples we used to make the cider in August were even more beautiful and abundant (even though it was so cold it snowed while we were back)! Feeling inspired because you just don’t see apple trees like this in California, we decided to pick them and use them.

I love baking, but I also love being healthy… So we decided to make this crisp as healthy as possible and it turned out the most delicious crisp I’ve tasted! Try it at home! Make sure you use the best organic apples, even if you can’t pick them straight off the tree 🙂

Ingredients:

Topping:

  • 2/3 cup almond flour or meal
  • 1/3 cup pecans, chopped
  • 5 tablespoons palm or coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup coconut flour
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil (melted and cooled)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of salt
